Gilbert & Sullivan Society Programme 97th Season 2019-20

Dear Members,

Unfortunately, with the current restrictions we cannot go ahead with our planned meetings scheduled for Conway Hall during the rest of 2020.  We will review the situation in January 2021 and keep you informed by email and on our website about what we will be doing.

Following our very successful AGM by Zoom, we have been able to provide   you with an alternative programme for 3 meetings in this medium.    Zoom is very easy to install and use, completely free and safe.   If you have never used Zoom before, Robert Gray is happy to help you get set up.  You just need access to the internet.   To participate with any or all of these events, you need to email Robert on mrgoldbury@hotmail.com who will provide you with  zoom log in details shortly before the events.  We continue to be grateful to Stuart Box for hosting Zoom and freely giving the Society  the benefit of his considerable technical know-how.

Live music doesn’t work well digitally and we are hoping to be able to reschedule our ‘A Musical Grand Tour of Europe’ and our afternoon concert with Simon Butteriss live next year.   Simon recently did an interview for the G&S Opera TV.  Information on how to subscribe to this and all the other G&S they have on offer is available via the festival website. We also hope to see some magic from Michael Syme’s next year.

Here is our revised Zoom programme.   All events occur on the same date and time (BST/GMT) and as our planned meetings were scheduled:

For this evening we have decided to take the opportunity for a Special Members Night. A chance to catch up with old friends and to welcome overseas members and others who live too far away to be able to regularly join our meetings in London.

We will ask half a dozen members to nominate their favourite scene or song from G&S and then they will have 3 minutes to convince us. At the end of the evening you will be able to vote for your favourite.

At the end of the evening you will be able to vote for your favourite. As well as a general catch up and details of future Society events there will be an opportunity for break out rooms for small groups.

We are excited to announce that Roberta Morell will talk to you about her new book and answer any questions.  Originally we had planned to launch her D’Oyly Carte sequel, ‘D’Oyly Carte: Inside Out’ at the Society in May and thrilled that we can have something from Roberta on this November date.

In the meantime, you may like to buy her book which is  available by emailing Roberta direct on robertamorrell@ymail.com   Price is £17.00 including postage (for UK members) Overseas members should  check the postage price.

‘Inside Out’ has been well received by the G&S community on social media and our President, Miss Cynthia Morey, has been very complimentary, calling it her best work to date.

We are delighted to be still be able to offer our ‘Utopia Island Discs’ Seasonal Meeting special with Linda Anne Hutchison and her husband, Gordon Stewart. Vice President Linda was a principal soprano with the D’Oyly Carte, has taken a lively interest in the Society and contributed much to meetings in recent years.  Gordon is a professional musician, broadcaster and vocal coach in many fields of classical music.  Together they make a formidable team and should provide us with a most interesting and entertaining evening where they will be interviewed by Vice President, Leon Berger.
