David was born in Greenock. With D’Oyly Carte he was Repetiteur (1975-76), then Chorus Master and Associate Conductor (1976-82). In collaboration with Sir Charles Mackerras he reconstructed Sullivan’s lost cello concerto (1986) and in 1989 wrote and presented 14 interval talks for Radio 2’s complete G&S series. In 2000 he conducted the RPO, soloists and a choir of 500 in a concert to commemorate the centenary of Sullivan’s death and in 2005 edited a quantity of material relating to Sullivan’s connection with The Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain. He has recently contributed an article on Sullivan’s songs to the German publication SullivanPerspektiven2.

David is President of Manchester Affiliated Society.   For many years he was the resident MD for Grim's Dyke Opera. In recent years, he has published  two books setting out his D'Oyly Carte memoirs over the last years of the company:  'Nothing like Work or Right in the D'Oyly Carte'  and 'A bit more like Work or Life after the D'Oyly Carte'.
