Richard is well known for a variety of roles in the operatic world principally with English National Opera and The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. His first G&S role was the Learned Judge in 1977 at The Royal Academy of Music’s production of Trial by Jury and with various companies including Welsh National Opera, the D’Oyly Carte (from 1985), Opera della Luna, Charles Court Opera and the National G&S Opera Company he has played most of the comic roles including Rudolph (The Grand Duke).  In 2018 he added Rupert Vernon (Haddon Hall) to his repertoire.   He has also played the titular role in the Baker/Henty reconstruction of Thespis in 2008 at Normanfield Theatre.

In addition, Richard has performed in three semi-staged G&S productions at the Proms and has played Ko-Ko in the Jonathan Miller ENO production of The Mikado since 1989 becoming legendary in his constantly updated ‘little lists’.  Indeed, some years ago he collected and published a number of them which have now been printed.

This summer he is looking forward to completing the cannon with the role of John Wellington Wells with Charles Court Opera.
